In September 2008, after many years of living in South London where she had a small studio, Ffiona Lewis took the bold decision to move to a small town in East Suffolk. The large working space she was lent there and the excitement of having to adapt and settle permanently in a different place have been an inspiration to her. This current series is based on memories of enjoyable moments spent with friends and in her new environment.

A miscellany of table spoils, used condiments, empty platters and fabric fragments – windows on a weekend of human habitation, indoors and out.

Catching a glimpse.

A significant moment of trivia tightly knit with others to make a whole experience of a particular place and time – certain combinations satisfying an inner sense of a moment.

The central piece, an assemblage panel - “Contact Sheet, Edition 45 – Still Life Small Potatoes, Raw Umber” – marks a return to a place very familiar to Lewis. A weekend gathering of friends where she could initiate a base and gradually would have the time to let the atmosphere seep in and pick up on the social groups minutiae.

There is an extensive forensic analysis of ‘the glimpse’, whereby something becomes increasingly abstracted to a ‘Chinese whisper’. Once a distilled and simplified composition possesses its own rhythm and movement it is then transferred to its gessoed, primed hardboard.

The body of work goes on to include a further assemblage and oil panels drawing primarily from and chronicling the life and found scenarios around Lewis’s winter studio life in Aldeburgh.
