“I want the viewer to feel the breath, smell the sweat and taste the dust.’’

"Jo Taylor has joined a longstanding tradition when, as a student at Leeds, she first decided to go back to her childhood passion, and take the horse as her main subject. She has been studying it ever since. Like some modern day Stubbs she has attended post mortem examinations, unpicking the complexities of muscle and ligament and bone. She has sat by freezing northern gallops watching racehorses thundering by at full stretch. She has crouched for hours in the corner of stables. She has carried her sketchbook from Cowdray Park through Patagonia and the Subcontinent."

Rachel Campbell Johnston, The Times

"Jo spends much of her life looking at horses; on racetracks and wild marshes, stud farms and cattle ranches. Then at home in her studio in Lancashire, she re-invents what she saw with paint, bits of paper and sand – capturing the essential truth of how a horse looks and moves. Each piece, however impressionistic, delivers a thrill of recognition."

Jane Wheatley, The Times

"Her apparently simple outlines are augmented with textured layers and while this approach brings a spontaneous feel to the paintings, it is underpinned with the clever building of the equine form through a variety of surfaces that help breathe life into classical lines."

Emma Berry, Horse and Hound
